The Board of Directors of Electricité du Liban announced that, in implementation of the decision of the Board of Directors, the competent teams have begun cutting off electricity supply to public departments, institutions, and municipalities that are defaulting in paying their dues or reviewing the institution to settle their situation, in accordance with the revised regulations delivered by the administration to the concerned directorates. The Council had announced on October 23 that it would cut off food supply to these agencies as of Monday morning, November 2, with the exception of government hospitals. The Council indicated that as a result, a large number of concerned parties contacted the Foundation to settle its situation, and it paid payments of the dues owed to it, while providing written pledges to schedule the remaining amounts and pay them in monthly installments. On the other hand, other parties did not initiate any payment. The Corporation explained that the re-feeding was limited to entities that paid part of their dues and pledged in writing to pay the remaining amounts in monthly installments. All parties that contacted the Corporation also pledged to pay their upcoming consumption bills monthly and regularly, to avoid the accumulation of new dues. The Board of Directors confirmed that this file will remain open, and that collection follow-up will continue until all arrears are paid, provided that the power supply will be re-cut to any entity that fails to comply with settlements or pay its current bills. The Council stresses that these measures are not directed against the state or any of its institutions, but rather fall within the core of its duties in collecting the institution’s dues and preserving public money. The Council called on the concerned departments and institutions to take the initiative to fulfill their obligations, considering that paying the electricity consumption allowance is one of the simplest and self-evident obligations that are supposed to be adhered to automatically. The Board of Directors expresses its surprise at the uproar that accompanied the implementation of a procedure that falls within its most basic responsibilities and duties. He also thanked the departments and institutions that responded, and all the media that accompanied this step, and stressed the continuation of his efforts to ensure the continuity and financial sustainability of the Electricité du Liban, and to work to increase production and electrical supply hours. Therefore, clarification is required.
