The head of the International Monetary Fund, Kristalina Georgieva, announced that “intensive discussions are taking place regarding support for Lebanon, which reflects notable progress towards approving a loan program, while we intend to support Iraq “strongly” through a required loan program.”
She added in a closing press conference for the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank in Bangkok: “We will provide Iraq with financial and policy support. As for Lebanon, we are holding intensive discussions with the Lebanese authorities.” She continued: “We have made great progress in the program. We still have some joint work ahead of us, and I am confident that we will succeed.”
Georgieva said that it is necessary for regulators and supervisors to be fully aware of the risks resulting from non-banking institutions, electronic attacks and fraud. She added that the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank in Bangkok over the past few days were characterized by a mixture of optimism and anxiety.
She continued, "Central banks must focus intensely on maintaining price stability, and that members of the International Monetary Fund discussed weaknesses in economic flexibility with the depletion of energy reserves and financial resources."
