MP Nadim Gemayel affirmed today, Sunday, on the anniversary of President Bashir Gemayel from Sassine Square, that "talk, slogans, and speeches are nice, but the main question remains: what has been done and what has been achieved over the past years?", considering that "there is great disappointment, a greater feeling of helplessness, and the absence of the state."
He demanded that the state take matters into its own hands seriously, respect its decisions, and keep its word, stressing that "no one will come to do the work for it, and that the state must perform its duties," pointing out that "the United States has supported Lebanon and is helping it, but the Lebanese are also required to play their role.
Gemayel pointed out that "the Gulf countries love Lebanon and help it, and all they asked for is a serious state project built on will and courage in implementation," considering that "even with the new Syria, the way of dealing remains unclear, despite the fact that US President Donald Trump hinted on more than one occasion and asked President Ahmed al-Sharaa to intervene in Lebanon.
He stressed that "the issue of liberating Lebanon from the sway of illegitimate weapons is not the responsibility of Syria or Israel, but rather the responsibility of the Lebanese state," wondering how the world can take Lebanon seriously in light of the lack of harmony and commitment between the political authority and the military leadership.
He said that "no one will cause a civil war because of disarming Hezbollah," rejecting the excuse of civil war whenever decisiveness is demanded, and affirming that the Lebanese Army is the legitimate institution to which loyalty must be exclusively.
Gemayel considered that the state and its people are stronger than all projects of sedition and dragging the army into them, stressing that "the Lebanese project must be in the interest of Lebanon, which has an area of 10,452 square kilometers as defined by Bashir Gemayel."
He said: "For us, Lebanon of the 10,452 square kilometers is a space of freedom, hope, and dignity, a space of equality, justice, sovereignty, a free economy, and a free state," adding that "if the requirement is for the existence of the Lebanese to end in exchange for these slogans, the Lebanese will choose their existence."
Regionally, Gemayel called for non-interference in Lebanon's private affairs, stressing that "we do not have a complex about peace with anyone, neither with Israel nor with anyone else," and that the only problem is with any orientation that goes against Lebanon's interest.
He stressed that his position is for Lebanon first, "not for the previous Syria, nor for the subsequent Syria, nor for the Sublime Porte, nor for the Wali al-Faqih, nor for any Arab cause or cause that has no relation whatsoever to the interest of Lebanon," considering that the experiences of the past seventy years have proven that wars for causes unrelated to Lebanon bring nothing but ruin and woe.
Gemayel pointed out "that a year ago, from Ashrafieh specifically, talk was made about peace and a call for direct negotiations," stressing that "the shared borders with Israel require a bold decision that leads to a final resolution of the conflict and the crisis."
He said: "Peace is not surrender, and it is never a taboo. Peace is an inevitable decision if it is in the interest of Lebanon, the interest of the people of Lebanon, especially the south of Lebanon, the Shia of Lebanon, and every grain of soil of the 10,452 square kilometers."
