The Democrats won control of both chambers of the US Congress, after winning 240 seats in the House of Representatives compared to 147 seats for the Republicans, according to the latest tallies, while the results of 48 districts are still pending. In the Senate, Democrats secured 54 seats compared to 44 for Republicans, with the Alaska and Mississippi races remaining undecided. Their share could rise to 56 seats if they win the remaining two races. The Mississippi result is not expected to be announced for a few days, as thousands of ballot papers are still unsorted, awaiting verification of their owners’ eligibility. As for Alaska, it adopts a preferential ranking system. If no candidate obtains more than 50% of the first votes, the counting moves to a second round that may last weeks, according to the American CBS network. Voters chose all 435 members of the House of Representatives, along with 35 members of the 100-seat Senate. Before the elections, Republicans controlled the House of Representatives with 218 seats, compared to 214 for the Democrats, and the Senate with 53 seats, compared to 47 for the Democrats.
