French President Emmanuel Macron said that “nothing justifies” the violence witnessed by Saturday’s protests in France, stressing that “those who destroyed and those who plundered” would be held accountable.
Macron added, in a televised speech in which he addressed the French: “This evening we all feel anger and shame.”
He called for a distinction between the "legitimate demands" of protesters and "the perpetrators of looting."
The French President stressed that the discussion regarding the upcoming elections takes place "with the parties and not through violence in the street."
He also pledged a commitment to "full transparency" regarding the policing strategy.
The French police deployed the CRS 8 team specialized in combating violence in urban areas on Sunday in Paris, specifically in Place de la République, where a new gathering witnessed sharp tensions in the wake of widespread violence and looting in the same area.
Looting renewed in the area, as a clothing store was targeted, according to television footage.
The Paris Police Directorate told Agence France-Presse that "an invitation was circulated on social media to gather on Sunday at two o'clock in the afternoon (12:00 GMT) in Place de la République, without obtaining prior permission."
