The pricing of private generators for the month of August sparked a wave of objections among citizens on social media. A number of citizens published their monthly subscription bills amid dissatisfaction with their high prices despite the Ministry of Energy’s pricing, at a time when generator owners confirm that the high cost of operation and diesel is directly reflected in the pricing. With the issuance of the pricing for private generators for the month of August, the issue of the cost of electricity for private generators returned to the forefront, amid complaints from citizens who considered that the value of the bills had become an additional burden on their budgets. Citizens circulated on social media pictures of bills ranging from $304 to $1,000, at a time when the Ministry of Energy set the price of a kilowatt-hour for private generators at 48,241 liras in cities and areas whose altitude is less than 700 meters, and at 53,065 liras in high and remote areas. Saada: The increase in diesel increases the price In an interview with the Newsleb website, Abdo Saadeh, head of the Private Generator Owners Association, confirmed that citizens’ objection to the rise in bills is valid, pointing out that generator owners had warned of the price hike coinciding with the rise in diesel prices. Saadeh explained that the high cost of fuel is reflected in electricity pricing, considering that generator owners are not the party that determines oil and diesel prices, pointing out that the profit margin of generator owners is “limited,” calling for a reconsideration of the pricing mechanism. Saadeh revealed a proposal previously submitted by generator owners to the Ministries of Energy and Economy, which is based on adopting a joint mechanism for pricing diesel and electricity, stressing that implementing this proposal would contribute to reducing the value of the bill for citizens by between 40 and 50 percent. He pointed out that the generator owners formed a committee to follow up on the proposal, but, according to him, they did not receive a response for about five or six months. At a time when generator owners explain the reasons for the high cost, citizens are left with the most important question: How can these bills be afforded? Comments circulating on social media reflect a state of dissatisfaction, especially among citizens who say that the value of the generator bill is now deducting a large portion of their income, despite the variation in the value of the bills according to consumption, the number of amps, and power hours. The issue of generator pricing remains stuck between the high operating cost on the one hand, and the limited ability of citizens to bear more burdens on the other hand, in light of the continued dependence of a large segment of the Lebanese on private generators to secure electricity.
