President of the Republic General Joseph Aoun affirmed, during his reception of a delegation from the Maronite League, that the visit of the Syrian Foreign Minister to Lebanon today dispels the fears of some Lebanese regarding an intention by Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa to interfere in Lebanese affairs, pointing out that the visit confirms the falsity of what has been rumored, especially since its goal is to establish sound relations between the two countries on the basis of mutual respect and non-interference in internal affairs.
Aoun explained that the Syrian delegation emphasized the importance of bilateral cooperation taking place through constitutional institutions, meaning between state and state, rather than through any party or faction, and away from any interference in Lebanese affairs.
Regarding the framework formula, the President of the Republic affirmed that it does not contradict Lebanese rights and constants, but rather seeks to fully guarantee them, considering that negotiation constitutes the safest and least costly option for Lebanon after the heavy losses it has suffered in lives and property.
He added that the concept of sovereignty includes the state's sovereignty in making its decisions, pointing out that the state has chosen negotiations to recover its rights and ensure the Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory, and that negotiations are not treason, but rather a "diplomatic war" without shedding more blood. He stressed that whoever respects the principle of sovereignty must also respect the state's decision in this context.
_Aoun considered that Lebanon's interest at this pivotal stage requires not squandering American support to reach a solution, as well as the framework formula, alongside the support provided by the European Union and Gulf states._
He affirmed that the time has come for Lebanon to emerge from the era of wars and tutelages, pointing out that the majority of Lebanese support this path, especially the people of the South, who deserve to live in dignity and safety.
He concluded by stressing that Lebanon will not relinquish an inch of its land, calling for judging the state's performance through implementation, because the goals it has set do not differ from the aspirations of all Lebanese. He also praised the great effort exerted by the Lebanese negotiating delegation, both civilian and military, in the American capital.
For his part, Maroun Helou, the head of the Maronite League, affirmed that the current phase requires rallying around the state, its army, and its constitutional institutions, and supporting every national effort aimed at consolidating full sovereignty and restricting the decision of war and peace to the state alone.
Helou renewed the League's support for the President of the Republic, expressing confidence in him as a unifying national position and a guarantor of the interests of the Lebanese and the management of state affairs and negotiations in accordance with the provisions of the constitution, away from any external pressures or dictates, and without hurling accusations haphazardly.
