Lebanese Forces party leader Samir Geagea explained the nature of the incident that occurred last night in Ain Saadeh (Metn), following a proliferation of accounts and interpretations, affirming that the truth has become clear and must therefore serve as the starting point.
He said: "What happened is that the Israelis were targeting a member of the Quds Force, and a strike was directed at an old building, leading to the roof collapsing onto the home of our comrade Pierre Moawad, where he was present. He, his wife, and a lady visiting them fell, and a number of people who were with them or in the neighboring apartment were injured." He considered that what happened does not require much effort to interpret.
He pointed out that "Moawad was a long-time comrade in the Lebanese Forces, starting as a fighter in Beirut, then moving to artillery, and afterwards to political work following the Taif Agreement. After the party was dissolved by the tutelage authority, he was among the most prominent figures who worked to sustain party activity in Northern Metn, even from behind the scenes, at a time when that authority was banning any partisan work. He affirmed that he did not comply with this ban, but rather continued to do everything possible to preserve the continuity of partisan activity during that phase."
He added: "He later worked at the Bourj Hammoud center, where he assumed the task of center secretary, before being appointed as the head of the Lebanese Forces center in the town of Yahchouch in Ftouh Kesrouan."
After praising Moawad's virtues, the Lebanese Forces leader noted that he was "one of the comrades we take pride in within society, especially as he was distinguished by commitment and discipline, and was relied upon, particularly in difficult circumstances."
Expressing his sorrow over the martyrdom of his wife Flavia, "who was always by his side and passed away with him," Geagea offered "condolences to his children Gabriel, Charbel, and Gayle, considering that the torch is now in their hands to continue from where their father was forced to stop, because he would not have left under normal circumstances, but he has now moved to a better place. He also offered condolences to the family of the third victim, and to the people of Yahchouch in particular and Kesrouan-Ftouh in general," hoping that this tragedy would be the last of misfortunes. He added: "I will not suffice with words of condolences, given that societies and states are not built on condolences alone, but rather the role of the state must be addressed."
He said: "What is known as the deep state in Lebanon—comprising the Lebanese Army, the Internal Security Forces, and the judiciary—preferred to let some Lebanese walk towards suicide and destruction rather than confront them." He considered that assuming responsibility from the beginning would have been better for everyone, even for those who were treading this path. He pointed out that the atmosphere prevailing recently included great intimidation regarding the possibility of a civil war erupting, affirming that when the state decides to play its role, we will not witness a civil war, but rather some limited issues might occur, because the state is a system of major institutions and administrations."
He continued in this context: "Some promoted the idea that the state in Lebanon is weak and dilapidated, but it turned out that this formula is not correct when the state decides to work and carry out its tasks, even if it is not a major state. To mention but a few examples, this state enforces the application of laws in simple matters such as electricity bills or traffic violations, and therefore it is impermissible to leave citizens who trust it and consider it the source of their protection to their fate."
He questioned who bears the responsibility for what happened to Pierre Moawad, who did not commit any violation or mistake, but rather was an exemplary, committed citizen in his home, and was killed as a result of military actions, and not as a result of a natural accident."
He added: "Even if the state chooses not to prevent those who want to expose themselves to danger, it has no right to leave those who want to live in safety exposed to death inside their homes."
He said: "Municipalities are performing their duties by documenting information and referring it to the security agencies, but the follow-up by these agencies is insufficient. He stressed that the responsibility of identifying the parties that pose a danger does not fall upon the municipalities, but rather on the security agencies, which must have clear lists and take the necessary measures to protect the citizens who trust the state, for '75% of the Lebanese people are committed to the Lebanese state, but the latter is not committed to them, and this matter is absolutely unacceptable, and we do not want some people to reach the point of abandoning their belief in the logic of the state.'"
He said: "Our comrade Pierre, I consider him to have been martyred, but such incidents must not be repeated, and the security agencies must obtain accurate lists of the displaced persons present in safe areas in order to perform their role in conducting a precise survey in the safe areas."
After affirming that the situation cannot be allowed to continue as it is, he addressed all officials, and notably the so-called deep state, saying: "Clear mechanisms must be put in place to identify the sources of danger and deal with them immediately."
