Charbel and Soha Habib today filed a lawsuit for causing death (manslaughter) against OpenAI, Inc., its subsidiaries, and its CEO, Samuel Altman, before the Supreme Court of California, San Francisco District. Their son, Matthias, died on April 22, 2026, at the age of 15. The family is represented by the Social Media Victims Law Center and the Tech Justice Law Project, which will handle the legal claims. According to the statement issued by Habib's family, "Matthias was a healthy, happy boy with no history of mental health problems. He was a high achiever academically at the top of his class, and had diverse interests that included go-karting, playing the guitar, drawing, photography, and filmmaking. He also spent a large portion of his free time hiking and camping in the mountains. For approximately three years, his use of ChatGPT was limited." “His conversations were limited to topics such as schoolwork, cameras, hiking trails, and classic cars, with no signs of excessive use or spending long hours at night in conversation.” The statement explained that “in January 2026, and with a desire to develop himself, he decided to read the book “Meditations” by the philosopher Marcus Aurelius, a work that has been read for nearly two thousand years. The first question he asked on “Chat GBT” was: “Is Stoicism a sect (or a closed group)?”, as he wanted to make sure that he would not be drawn into something harmful.” He stated that "over the course of three months, ChatGPT - on his own initiative and without prior direction - led this 15-year-old boy from the writings of Marcus Aurelius towards the ideas of Friedrich Nietzsche, and then to nihilism and existentialism. Chat logs show that ChatGPT told him that 'The unexamined life is not worth living,' describing this statement as reflecting intellectual maturity." The statement added that the records “indicate that ChatGPT described the suicide as a ‘calm and dignified’ act. At all times, ChatGPT was fully aware of his age; the platform recorded and retained that age, and yet continued this correspondence.” The statement said, “On March 30, at 2:10 a.m., Mathias asked ChatGBT directly whether he should end his life, but the platform did not issue any alert to any competent authority. He died 23 days later, and on the night of his death, artificial intelligence helped him schedule a post on Instagram to appear after his passing.” The statement pointed out that “the Information Division’s investigations did not reveal any history of mental illness, family disputes, or instability, but investigators identified a contributing factor: continuous and directed exposure to philosophical ideas that exceeded his cognitive abilities, presented to him through artificial intelligence algorithms (a large linguistic model such as “ChatGPT”), despite the system’s knowledge that he was a minor. He was an intelligent and curious student, and this curiosity is precisely what “ChatGPT” exploited. But intelligence does not mean “Maturity: Fifteen-year-olds do not have the tools to resist tailored ideas presented to them with the confidence and fluency of ChatGPT, and according to investigations, these conversations have led to a distorted understanding of death.” The family confirmed in the statement that OpenAI has “the technical ability to intervene in dangerous conversations, whether by blocking users or reporting messages, but it has not taken any action. In August 2025, OpenAI publicly acknowledged that its security systems do not always work as they are supposed to in sensitive situations, despite the presence of preventative measures. Even if these controls are properly implemented, ChatGPT remains unsafe; the developing teenage brain represents a weakness that artificial intelligence can easily exploit, Just like finding a loophole in computer software.” The family noted that 'Mathias' loved hiking in nature, camping, playing the guitar, drawing, photography, and making films. He excelled in his studies, and aspired to a decent life, but - through a few conversations with 'ChatGPT' over a period of three months - he was convinced that this was impossible. Artificial intelligence is beneficial to humanity; it may help in treating cancer and enhancing human productivity, but what is the purpose of his interaction with children? And since 'OpenAI' is permitted “In communicating with children, I was prevented from speaking to my son.” In this context, the father, Charbel Habib, said: “On March 30, my son asked the ChatGPT application if he should end his life. The application was aware of his age, yet it did not inform anyone. I was sleeping in the same house, but he did not wake anyone. ChatGPT had twenty-three days to warn the mother, but he never did.” In turn, the mother, Soha Habib, stated that the family “established the “Mathias Habib Foundation” in memory of Mathias, and the foundation works to protect children from the harm caused by artificial intelligence through awareness, practical practices, and research.” Note: For those who need support: You can contact “Embrace Lifeline” via the number 1564 (in Lebanon), or the number 988 (in the United States).
