The people and activists of Reshmiya and the neighborhood carried out a protest at the invitation of the municipality of Reshmiya, in rejection of the decision of the Minister of Education, Rima Karami, to close Maroun Abboud High School inside the town, which dates back to 1913 and has embraced and graduated generations from the mountain region. Representatives Raji Al-Saad, Nazih Matta and Cesar Abi Khalil, Mayor of Rashmiya Dalia Farah at the head of the municipal council members, Mayor of Chartoun Joseph Maroun, Mayor of Al-Bireh Simon Musallam, Mayor of Al-Rajma Khairallah Khairallah, Deputy Mayor of Aramoun Abdullah Abu Ghannam, Mukhtar of Rashmiya Fadi Al-Kafrawi and Tony Negm, coordinator of the “Lebanese Forces” in Aley, Salim Abi Daher, coordinator of “The Movement” participated in the protest. "Free Patriotic" Arlette Matta, former mayor of Rashmiya, Mansour Mubarak, former Rashmiya high school principal, Salwa Khattar, member of the Catholic Media Center, Saad Elias, head of the "Lebanese Forces" center in Rashmiya, Maroun Wahba, head of the "Pulse of Aley" association, Antoine Abu Fayyad, and a crowd of parents and students who raised banners refusing to close the doors of the high school and cause their displacement from the mountain. An urgent petition was signed and will be submitted to the Minister of Education, signed by representatives and activists. And hundreds of parents and students to stop the decision to merge Maroun Abboud High School, Reshmiya Branch, with Aley High School, and keep it as an independent educational institution instead of imposing additional burdens on students and families, given the geographical distance, the difficulty of students’ transportation in the winter, the impact on the psychological stability of degree students, and the repercussions on families remaining in their villages, with the proposal to transfer the French branch from Aley High School to Reshmiya High School. The move was accompanied by the Lebanese Maronite Order’s announcement of exempting the high school from rent allowance, in order to reduce the financial cost. Knowing that the school, which was rehabilitated with a donation of $950,000, is equipped with solar energy and water, which saves it any electricity and water bills and any other costs.
