Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said on the anniversary of the assassination of President-elect Bachir Gemayel: "On the anniversary of the assassination of President-elect Bachir Gemayel, I affirm that no matter how severe and deep political disagreements may be, we cannot accept political assassination in our society—neither with roadside bombs and explosives nor with silenced weapons. For our history has taught us that assassination may end a life, but it has never succeeded in settling a dispute." He stressed that turning the page on violence from our past is not achieved by denying or forgetting it, but rather through frankness and reconciliation, and by resorting to institutions and democracy in managing our differences.
