Minister of Interior Ahmad al-Hajjar discussed, during a security meeting held in the presence of Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, the general security situation in the country, with a focus on following up on measures to strengthen the state's control over the Governorate of Beirut.
The meeting addressed the file of monopolizing weapons in the capital, as part of efforts aimed at enhancing stability and controlling the security situation.
In this context, the Prime Minister affirmed that the decision to extend state control over Beirut will be fully implemented, stressing that yesterday's gunfire incidents are "unacceptable" and carry serious repercussions for stability.
He pointed out that the security forces have carried out arrests on various grounds, including transporting weapons, wandering without identity papers, in addition to violations related to cars and motorcycles.
He also announced that the security forces arrested a number of shooters in the southern suburb, and that pursuit will continue against all those involved, with a strict stance on security measures.
He noted that the circumstances the country is going through require strengthening security efforts, stressing the intensification of fixed and mobile checkpoints in Beirut.
He said that the country has entered a new path, adding that implementing the decision to extend state control over Beirut needs weeks and months, and that there is "no retreat" from this direction, reaffirming the restriction of weapons to the state.
He recalled that what is required is a complete Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territories, considering that negotiations have not yet begun, and that the meetings in Washington are preliminary and aimed at preparing for them.
He expressed his pursuit of a complete ceasefire and commitment to it by Israel, explaining that the US State Department statement reflects what each party expressed during the meeting.
In addition, Salam considered that the current situation is 90% better than it was a year ago, calling on everyone to submit to the law and cabinet decisions.
He expressed his hope to hold a meeting with Presidents Joseph Aoun and Nabih Berri as soon as possible. He also considered that the ceasefire has not been implemented in the required manner, while the Lebanese Army has imposed itself in new positions south of the Litani.
