US President Donald Trump announced the extension of the ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel for a period of 3 weeks, in a move aimed at containing tension and giving the political track an opportunity to advance.
Trump said that "the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon will be extended for three weeks," stressing that the United States "will work with Lebanon to help it protect itself from Hezbollah."
The announcement came after a meeting held in the Oval Office, in which Vice President Jay DeVance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio participated, in addition to Lebanon's Ambassador to the United States, Nada Hamada Moawad, and the Israeli Ambassador to the United States, Yehiel Leiter. Trump described the meeting as "historic," adding: "It was a great honor to be part of this meeting."
In parallel, Trump revealed a remarkable political move, announcing that he “expects to host Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun soon in Washington,” indicating a push toward a direct negotiating path during the extension period.
Trump considered that "the peace file in Lebanon is relatively easy compared to other files," stressing that "the United States will support Lebanon directly to enable it to protect itself from Hezbollah," at a time when he called on Iran to "cut off funding for the party."
He also pointed out that "Israel must defend itself if it is exposed to missiles, but it must do so with caution," in an attempt to control the pace of field escalation.
For his part, the US Secretary of State believed that this extension “gives an opportunity to work towards a lasting peace between Israel and Lebanon,” while the US Vice President described the step as “a major historical moment for the world.”
In conclusion, the extension of the ceasefire constitutes a crucial window of time for political action led by Washington, with a bet on translating the expected meeting between Aoun and Netanyahu into a negotiating track, while the southern territory remains under a careful test of the extent of the truce’s durability.
