The White House announced, on Tuesday, the end of the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, after talks that lasted approximately an hour and a half. Netanyahu left the White House after the meeting with Trump, while White House spokeswoman Carolyn Levitt described the meeting as “positive and fruitful.” Part of the meeting between Trump and Netanyahu at the White House Levitt said that Trump's meetings with both Netanyahu and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky went positively and fruitfully, without giving further details. The meeting between Netanyahu and Trump was their first since the outbreak of war with Iran last February. This is the eighth meeting between Trump and Netanyahu since the beginning of the US president's second term, amid rising tension in relations between the two sides against the backdrop of the course of the war and differing estimates regarding its results. Trump and Netanyahu in the White House During their last meeting, which took place less than three weeks before the outbreak of war, Netanyahu sought to persuade Trump to join Israel in launching strikes against Iran. However, relations between the two men later witnessed periods of rapprochement and divergence, as reports indicated that senior American officials expressed their dissatisfaction with Netanyahu’s expectations regarding the course of the war and its results. Trump was sometimes forced to restrain the Israeli Prime Minister's movements, to prevent him from expanding the scope of military operations in Lebanon, as part of Netanyahu's efforts to weaken the Iranian-backed Hezbollah. A sharp phone call that took place between the two men in June, which included profanity, revealed the extent of the tension in the relationship, after Trump described Netanyahu as “completely crazy,” according to what was leaked to the media at the time, before the US President later confirmed that the call had taken place. The meeting comes at a time when the Israeli government is seeking to rally support for Trump, in light of the approaching elections scheduled in Israel on October 27. Israeli Defense Minister Yisrael Katz had said earlier that Israel "strongly" wants to launch a new strike against Iran, but he indicated that the United States does not agree to that at the present time.
