Iranian Shura Council Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf stated that negotiations with the United States have made progress, but large gaps still exist between the two parties.
He said: “We have reached agreements on some issues, but not on others, and various proposals have been put forward. We are still far from a final discussion, and we insist on some issues that are non-negotiable for us.”
He added that the Islamabad talks did not remove Iranian mistrust towards the United States, but the mutual understanding between the two sides became more realistic.
Qalibaf revealed that the Iranian side began studying the American messages starting from the thirty-sixth day of the war, noting that the actual exchange of messages took place through Pakistan during the last 48 hours before the ceasefire, while direct negotiations began after the Iranian delegation arrived in Islamabad.
He pointed out that the remaining differences focus on the nuclear issue and the Strait of Hormuz, stressing that Iran seeks a sustainable peace in which war is not repeated.
Qalibaf explained that including Hezbollah in the ceasefire was one of the basic terms among the ten conditions put forward by Iran, saying: “Among our discussions was that the ceasefire also include Hezbollah.”
He stressed that “the ceasefire must include the party, and this was part of Iran’s conditions for a ceasefire in the region.”
He pointed out that the Pakistani Prime Minister, in his tweet calling for a ceasefire, stressed the necessity of including Lebanon, adding: “When we went to Pakistan, a ceasefire was announced in Lebanon, but it was not implemented properly, so I called on the United States to complete and stabilize it.”
He revealed that Washington asked Tehran to normalize traffic in the Strait of Hormuz if a ceasefire was achieved in Lebanon.
Qalibaf warned of the consequences of violating the ceasefire, saying: “We announced that if the ceasefire is not adhered to in Lebanon, we will strike and break off the negotiations.”
He stressed that Iran's approach requires entering into the ten-year framework for negotiations after implementing the ceasefire in Lebanon and releasing Iranian funds.
