The ship SEAHORSE completed the last chapter of its emergency docking in the port of Beirut, at the end of an integrated relief and technical operation that lasted ten days, which began with it running aground off Sidon on October 25, 2026, moving to the port of Beirut and rescuing members of its crew, then bringing it in, securing its anchorage, and unloading its cargo, leading to its sailing again on November 5.
The ship had arrived off the port of Beirut on October 26, and was in a state of severe tilt that raised fears that it might sink, which prompted members of its crew to throw themselves into the sea, and required urgent intervention from the Civil Defense and the Beirut Fire Brigade to rescue them, in conjunction with the assessment of the ship’s condition by the competent authorities, with the participation of the Baltaji ship pilotage station, the marine pilot (Pilot), and the maritime expert assigned by the port presidency, to take the necessary measures to deal with it safely.
Under the directives of the Minister of Public Works and Transport, Fayez Rasamny, and in coordination between the Chairman of the Board of Directors and Director General of the Port of Beirut, Marwan Al-Nafi, and the General Director of Land and Sea Transport, Brigadier General Mazen Basbous, the decision was made to bring the ship into the port on October 26, where it docked at Pier 11, to begin a delicate phase of field work to stabilize it and ensure the safety of its structure, crew, and cargo.
The port administration, especially the Operations Department, the Security and Safety Authority, and the Beirut Port (PSFO), mobilized its technical and operational crews, with the assistance of maritime experts and specialized teams, while providing the necessary equipment and mechanisms to stabilize the ship and reduce the risks of its tilting. In parallel, all security services operating in the port played a pivotal role in keeping pace with the operation at its various stages, providing a safe work environment and keeping operations under control despite the sensitivity of the ship’s technical situation.
Thanks to continuous work around the clock, coordination between port teams and maritime experts, and constant security support, the technical teams succeeded in opening the ship’s holds after more than five hours of careful work, during which they used special equipment due to the difficulties resulting from the ship’s tilt. This allowed the entire cargo of timber to be unloaded by November 4, a remarkable period of time compared to the usual time to unload similar ships, which is eight working days.
On November 5, after completing the necessary procedures in coordination with the competent authorities in the General Directorate of Land and Maritime Transport, the ship was granted permission to sail.
With the departure of the SEAHORSE ship, an operation was concluded that reflected the readiness of the Port of Beirut and the competence of its crews, and constituted a model for coordination and integration between the departments and concerned parties, from the Administration and Investment of the Port of Beirut and the General Directorate of Land and Sea Transport to the Lebanese Army, especially the Navy, the Civil Defense, the Beirut Fire Brigade and other relevant technical authorities, with active support from all security services. This cooperation has demonstrated the importance of integrating roles and responsibilities in responding to emergency situations, protecting lives and ships, and ensuring maritime safety.
