The Board of Directors of the Electricité du Liban clarified what was raised during the session of the Parliamentary Committee responsible for Public Works and Energy regarding the restarting of the Zouk and Jiyeh plants, and the media statements that followed.
The Board of Directors indicated that what was circulated about the existence of a division within the Board of Directors regarding the restarting of the Zouk and Jiyeh plants does not reflect reality, stressing that its Chairman and members continue to perform their duties in a spirit of cooperation and institutional responsibility, based on their concern for the interest of the institution and the proper functioning of the public facility.
He said in a statement that holding members of the Board of Directors personally responsible in advance for any technical malfunction that may occur after restarting ignores the distribution of powers and obligations among the concerned parties, pointing out that responsibilities are determined in accordance with laws, regulations and contracts, and in light of the facts and technical reasons, and do not arise automatically simply by taking a decision to restart.
The Council indicated that its member in charge of following up on the file, Engineer Samer Hosnia, presented a detailed technical presentation based on the documents and data received from the organization’s management and MEP Company, explaining that the report of the committee in charge of following up on the file will be presented to the Board of Directors next Monday, to study it and take the appropriate decision in light of its results.
The Council confirmed that it has been seeking, since the first day it assumed its duties, to increase electricity production and improve nutrition, in a way that reduces the Lebanese people’s burden of subscribing to private generators.
The Board of Directors stressed that the obstruction attempts facing it from inside and outside the organization will not deter it from performing its duties and working to improve the electrical supply.
He called on the Council to seek accuracy and objectivity in dealing with this file, and not to anticipate the results of technical and administrative procedures or to issue conclusions that cast doubt on the decision-making mechanisms before they are completed, stressing that it will continue to exercise its powers and make its decisions based on technical and legal data and the public interest, in accordance with the established procedures.
