Minister of Justice Adel Nassar confirmed, during a press conference, that “everyone has become convinced that handing over Hezbollah’s weapons to the Lebanese army has become a settled decision,” stressing that the issue at hand today is implementing this decision with the least amount of damage possible.
Nassar said, “This weapon brought nothing but disasters and absurd adventures to Lebanon,” adding that generations in Lebanon “have known nothing from this weapon except destruction and death, without any horizon,” and that these years did not bring, in his opinion, any positive results.
He asked: “How can the continuation of weapons be justified as long as Hezbollah says that it is not a deterrent, and that there is no equal opportunity?” He considered that if the goal of keeping it was to disrupt the negotiations, which he described as the only way to regain territory and stop the attacks, “then this is a disaster.”
He added: "If the goal of keeping weapons is to participate again in a support war in the event that things develop negatively between the United States and Iran, then this is another disaster, because it means sacrificing Lebanon once again for reasons that have nothing to do with it."
Nassar stressed that the issue of weapons "has become urgent and cannot be postponed indefinitely," pointing out that saying that confining weapons to the state negatively affects the Shiite community "contraries to the truth."
He stressed that the goal is to "ensure the security of all Lebanese, restore the land, protect all regions, and rebuild and build the state," noting that this path "is not directed against any Lebanese group."
He continued that the Lebanese cannot live in constant obsession with what might happen if a new war breaks out between Iran and the United States, adding that "Hezbollah's leadership itself during the last war was not able to confirm what the decision would be, because the decision exists elsewhere."
He concluded by stressing that "confining weapons to the Lebanese state has become something that must be implemented, as quickly as possible."
