The people of Nabatieh launched an appeal demanding the immediate dispatch of the army to the city and its surroundings, the protection of its people, and the restoration of the state's role in maintaining security and sovereignty. The statement read: More than 600 signatories, including doctors, engineers, lawyers, bankers, journalists, academics, writers, and activists, demand in the "Second Nabatieh Appeal" that the army be sent immediately to Nabatieh: Save the capital of Jabal Amel and its historical center Second Nabatieh Appeal - Send the army immediately to Nabatieh: Save the capital of Jabal Amel and its historical center On May 29, 2026, we launched the first "Nabatieh Appeal," warning that war and destruction would reach the city and calling on the state to act before it is too late. Since then, conditions have worsened. The occupation has expanded, the circle of destruction has widened, and the danger has approached Nabatieh and its surroundings. What was a warning then has become a direct danger today. Nabatieh and its villages are threatened today with meeting the fate of villages, towns, and cities that preceded them in demolition and displacement. The people of the south live between displacement, fear, and waiting, and entire villages have lost their features. And no one can ask people to wait for ruin to reach their city in order to raise their voices. The Israeli enemy is the primary and direct party responsible for the aggression, killing, occupation, and destruction. It is the one that demolishes, blows up, uproots, and expands its attacks from the front-line villages toward the depth of the south, in light of a massive imbalance of power and the absence of an effective deterrent. This is clear responsibility for every house destroyed, every land occupied, and every family uprooted from its place. However, the clarity of the enemy's responsibility does not erase internal responsibilities; rather, it makes them more urgent. Responsibility for the crime lies with its perpetrator, and responsibility for choices, decisions, and positions lies with those who made them, covered them up, or remained silent about them. And whoever has held the decision of war and security for years, and told the southerners that they were the most capable of protecting them, must answer today for the results of their choice: Where has the land ended up? What has happened to the villages? And what remains of the people's capacity to endure and return? What took place in the Ali al-Taher hills cannot be overlooked. These hills are the gateway to Nabatieh and one of the essential sites for its protection. When it became possible to place them in the custody of the state and the Lebanese Army, this was refused, and they fell into the hands of the occupation. The land that was not handed over to the state at the appropriate time has become in the custody of the enemy, and Nabatieh is now threatened from its gateway. It is no longer acceptable to repeat the same rhetoric. The protection of the people and the land must take precedence over every partisan or regional consideration. Regions of the south are free from direct Israeli presence, yet the presence of state institutions, especially the army and security forces, remains limited. People rightfully ask: Where is the state, and why is the army absent from areas where it is able to be present? Every vacuum left by the state becomes an open space for de facto forces and the enemy alike. A direct and decisive responsibility also rests upon the Lebanese state, represented by the Presidency of the Republic and the Presidency of the Council of Ministers jointly, and upon the Lebanese Army, to carry out their constitutional and national role in protecting Nabatieh, the villages of the district, and its residents, without waiting for negotiations or consensus with any party, and without treating the protection of the people and the land as if it were a matter subject to political bargaining. The state's role is not to be an observer or a witness to the expansion of occupation, destruction, and displacement, but to use its full powers and capabilities to prevent the expansion of the occupation, protect what remains of the cities and villages, and pull away the pretexts used by the enemy to justify further destruction and displacement. We, the undersigned, from the people of Nabatieh, Jabal Amel, and the south, and from the Lebanese keen to protect the city and its people, demand the deployment of the army and security forces in Nabatieh, its surroundings, and at its entrances, and that the state assume full responsibility for its security; limiting the decision of war and peace to its legitimate institutions; and launching an urgent political and diplomatic movement, Arab and international, to halt the attacks and prevent the expansion of the occupation. Nabatieh is not a trench for any axis, nor is it the property of any political group. It is the city of its people, the capital of Jabal Amel and its historical center, and an authentic part of the Lebanese entity. Saving it is the responsibility of everyone who holds influence or decision-making power, and protecting it begins with restoring the state's role and ending the duality of decision-making that has exhausted the south and weakened its ability to protect itself.
