Insulting pictures of Maronite Patriarch Bechara Al-Rai spread across social media, based on a report broadcast by LBCI. In response to these abuses, the Maronite League, headed by Engineer Maroun Al-Helou, issued a statement in which it denounced what it described as “violence and incitement” targeting religious symbols, considering that what happened constituted an attack on the position of the Maronite Patriarchate and the person of the Patriarch, for what he represents on both the personal and national levels. The association announced that it had placed these violations in the custody of the competent judiciary, considering its statement as an official notification to take the necessary measures, arrest and hold those involved accountable. She stressed that the Maronite Patriarchate remains a unifying national symbol, calling for preserving coexistence and preventing a slide toward seditious rhetoric or attacks on sanctities. The Association also called on the judicial and security authorities to strictly enforce the laws against anyone proven to be involved in these acts, and not to tolerate any abuse that affects religious dignity and symbols. She concluded by stressing that protecting religious symbols is an essential part of protecting the national fabric, calling for a unified stance to deter these phenomena and preserve Lebanon’s image.
