The death toll from a collision between two passenger trains that occurred on Monday night near Jakarta has risen to 14, according to what the state railway company (KAI) announced.
The company said in a statement, “Based on the latest data as of 08:45 WIB (01:45 GMT), 14 people have been confirmed dead.” Another 84 people received treatment in hospital.
The accident occurred near Bekasi Timur station, about 25 kilometers from the Indonesian capital.
Jakarta Police Chief Asip Edi Sohiri said that a long-distance train collided with the last carriage reserved for women on a suburban train.
Railway company spokeswoman Anna Borba had previously told the local television station on Tuesday morning that the accident resulted in seven deaths and 81 wounded.
Earlier, an Agence France-Presse correspondent saw a number of people being pulled out of the rubble and transported on stretchers to waiting ambulances in full view of hundreds of passers-by who showed signs of shock.
All the victims were on the suburban train, and rescuers were working to extract those trapped inside.
The Jakarta Search and Rescue Agency said in a statement that the accident caused "severe damage to many cars."
“We use de-confinement equipment to ensure that the rescue operation is carried out quickly, while giving the highest priority to the safety of victims and rescue teams alike,” she added.
It is likely that a taxi collided with a suburban train at a railway crossing, causing the train to stop on the tracks where the collision occurred, according to Franotto Wipobo, another spokesman for the company, which confirmed that all 240 passengers on the long-distance train were evacuated safely.
The last major train accident in Indonesia, which killed four crew members and injured about twenty people, was in West Java province in January 2024.
