UNIFIL forces announced on Tuesday that earlier this evening, the Israeli enemy army detained one of the mission's peacekeepers after he blocked the path of a logistical convoy. The soldier was released in less than an hour, after direct and immediate communications from the Head of the UNIFIL Mission, its Commander-in-Chief, and the Mission’s Liaison Branch. UNIFIL stressed that any detention of a peacekeeper is a flagrant violation of international law, and that any interference in their work constitutes a violation of Resolution 1701. The mission called on all parties to respect the special protection status of United Nations peacekeepers, and to refrain from any interference that might hinder their freedom of movement.
