Prime Minister Nawaf Salam stressed that the government's commitment to the people of the south and Nabatieh "has not and will not change," noting that every visit to the region carries feelings of pain and responsibility for what it deserves from the state.
Salam said that a number of ministers visited Nabatieh and the south during the recent period, explaining that many of these visits were made at his request, and that he personally followed their results.
He also directed the ministers to go to the south to determine what the state can accomplish quickly with its current capabilities, and what needs additional funding.
He added that the projects launched today may be limited to the extent of the needs of Nabatieh and the south, stressing that the government does not claim otherwise.
He pointed out that 23 tenders were launched through the Council for Development and Reconstruction, including removing obstacles, restoring roads, rehabilitating shelter centers, and providing medical equipment, among others.
Salam pointed out that the restoration of the Nabatieh Governmental Serail has been completed today, and the State Security Center, the Civil Status Department and the Public Security Center have reopened, with the Palace of Justice reopening soon.
He explained that he is aware of the scale of the crisis, but the scale of the needs exceeds the capabilities of the Lebanese state and its ability to bear these burdens alone.
He asked: “What if a new war breaks out in the region? Do we accept that Lebanon and the South pay the price for it again? Do we keep waiting, while our people remain displaced, and reconstruction remains postponed?” Pointing out that "no rational person can accept this."
He believed that the real guarantee lies in moving forward by mobilizing as much potential and support as possible to achieve complete Israeli withdrawal and rebuild the state.
He considered that waiting for a major regional settlement is not an option for Lebanon, as it may or may not come, or may be delayed for years, and it may be when it is achieved at Lebanon's expense.
