The Eritrean Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced, on Thursday, the severing of all diplomatic relations with Ethiopia, in response to Addis Ababa’s decision to expel ten Eritrean diplomats, in a diplomatic escalation that coincides with renewed fighting in northern Ethiopia. The ministry said, in a statement published on the “X” platform and reported by Agence France-Presse: “Eritrea has no choice but to respond in kind and sever all diplomatic relations with Ethiopia, with all the negative repercussions that would result from that.” The Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the expulsion of the ten diplomats from Addis Ababa, considering that they constitute a "direct threat to Ethiopian national security." The ministry added that it would close its embassy in Asmara, in response to what it described as "direct and indirect hostile and warlike actions" committed by Eritrea towards Ethiopia. The Ethiopian government accuses Eritrea of supporting Tigray People's Liberation Front fighters. The brief Eritrean statement transmitted did not include details of the response to these accusations. Hundreds of people have been killed and wounded since violent battles renewed in northern Ethiopia last week, with clashes continuing on several fronts.
