An Iraqi government official announced yesterday, Sunday, the completion of the withdrawal of American forces from Iraq, indicating that all combat forces and logistical support forces have left the country. He indicated in an interview with the German News Agency that the withdrawal process has been completely completed, while no official confirmation has yet been issued from the American side. In 2024, Iraq and the United States agreed on a schedule to end the American military presence in the country. According to the US Department of Defense, about 2,500 American soldiers have been stationed in Iraq in recent years. Prior to the withdrawal, American forces were distributed between Erbil in the Kurdistan region, and a base near Baghdad airport, in addition to sites in the Green Zone in the capital. American forces returned to Iraq in 2014, at the request of the Iraqi government, as part of the international coalition to fight ISIS, three years after their withdrawal that followed the American invasion of Iraq in 2003. The organization was declared militarily defeated in Iraq in 2017, but its cells are still active in some areas and launch attacks from time to time. The completion of the withdrawal comes at a time when Iraq is witnessing security repercussions related to the Iranian war, amid attacks that have targeted American facilities and forces during the recent period, in addition to targets belonging to the Kurdish forces.
