The slaughterhouse authority in the Beirut Municipality, under the directives of the Governor of the City of Beirut, Judge Marwan Abboud, carried out its field oversight tours of butcheries within the capital, with the support of the Beirut Guard Regiment, to ensure compliance with approved health conditions, ensure the safety and quality of meat, and protect consumer health. The Public Relations Department of the Beirut Municipality indicated that the tours included the areas of Hamra, Aisha Bakkar, Zoqaq al-Blat, Tariq al-Jdeidah and Barbir. Confirming that the specialized teams conducted field inspections on a number of butcheries, to verify the safety of the meat, methods of preserving, cooling, storing, displaying it, its expiration date, and the extent of compliance with general hygiene conditions and food safety requirements. The results of the inspection showed the existence of health violations related to non-compliance with the conditions for preserving and refrigerating meat and general hygiene, in addition to monitoring practices that entail health risks, most notably thawing frozen meat in ways that do not comply with health conditions, and re-displaying and selling it as fresh meat, at fresh meat prices, which constitutes misleading the consumer and violating the conditions for trading food materials. The tours also revealed practices related to mixing leftover meat with meat that is not fit for human consumption, and using it in the preparation of manufactured meat products, including kofta, sausages, sausages, burgers, and minced meat, in clear violation of food safety requirements, and the resulting risks of contamination and food poisoning, as they were destroyed to prevent them from being sold to citizens. As a result of these revelations, they were suspended from work, and the slaughterhouses department in the Beirut Municipality organized arrest reports against the owners of the violating butcher shops, in preparation for referring them to the preliminary judge examining municipal violations, to take the necessary legal measures in accordance with the established procedures. The Governor of Beirut confirmed the continuation of inspection and monitoring tours by the specialized health teams in the Beirut Municipality in all areas of the capital, and to pursue violations that affect food safety, while taking legal measures against violators, in a way that ensures consumer protection and the preservation of public health in the capital.
