George Abdel Sater (54), a native of the town of Iaat, died yesterday, Tuesday, inside Zahle prison following a sharp deterioration in his health condition, according to the "Committee of Prisoners' Families in Lebanon". And the committee announced that the death toll within 24 hours has risen to two. The committee pointed out in its statement that the detainee remained without trial for 12 years, and that his health condition deteriorated over the years as a result of severe psychological pressure and the inhuman conditions from which the country's prisons suffer, noting that the circumstances of "George's" death provide a glaring example of the medical negligence from which detainees and prisoners suffer. Industrial and commercial facilities... The committee pointed out that the prisoner would have had a chance to receive treatment in the hospital and obtain the necessary medical care to save his life, had the implementation of the amnesty law recently signed by President of the Republic Joseph Aoun begun, however, the constitutional challenge submitted by MP Gebran Bassil led to freezing the law's trajectory, according to the committee, which considered that this prevents achieving the goals of the law in alleviating overcrowding and saving the lives of prisoners. In conclusion, the committee appealed to the Constitutional Council to reject the submitted challenge and instruct the immediate application of the law, considering that ending the procrastination in this file has become an urgent matter to halt the increasing number of deaths witnessed in various Lebanese prisons. On another note, the comprehensive strike initiated by prisoners in Roumieh Central Prison enters its fourth consecutive day, as more than 400 prisoners in Building "B" continue to insist on abstaining from food and medicine in protest against the suspension of the effects of the general amnesty law and the exceptional sentence reduction awaiting the Constitutional Council's decision in the coming days.
