The Information Affairs Office at the General Directorate of Public Security announced that some media outlets and social networking sites are circulating news that people of non-Lebanese nationalities have obtained Lebanese passports. The General Directorate of Public Security explained that the process of issuing Lebanese passports, especially those currently approved, is subject to precise and strict procedures that adopt the highest security and technical standards, in addition to advanced biometric and technological systems. She also explained that the forgery cases that occurred in previous years and were uncovered, investigations conducted by the Directorate showed that they were given to people who applied for passports in different cases based on forged identification documents. As soon as these violations were confirmed, the Directorate set the restrictions on all passports issued with incorrect occurrences and took the necessary measures to prevent their use or circulation. The individuals involved were also arrested and referred to the competent judiciary, and judicial rulings were issued against them. The Directorate stressed that it deals with the utmost seriousness with any news or data it receives, and immediately initiates the necessary investigations, which are still ongoing to date, as it has not been discovered that there is any Lebanese passport issued to people of other nationalities. In the event that it is found that there are passports issued in devious ways, appropriate legal measures will be taken against anyone proven to be involved. It called on the media and citizens to exercise the utmost accuracy and responsibility in circulating news and information, and not to be drawn into rumors or unreliable allegations that would mislead public opinion, create confusion, and harm citizens’ confidence in official and security institutions.
