A White House official announced that the meeting between US President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in Beijing on Thursday was “positive” and witnessed discussions on enhancing economic cooperation between the United States and China.
Reuters quoted an official as saying that Washington and Beijing agreed that “Iran should not be allowed to possess a nuclear weapon,” stressing the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open to international shipping traffic.
The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed in a statement the necessity of building “stable and strategic” relations with the United States, by managing differences and expanding channels of communication between the two sides.
She added that the two presidents exchanged views on a number of regional and international files, stressing that the Taiwan issue remains “the most sensitive factor” in relations between Beijing and Washington.
Beijing reiterated its position rejecting US arms sales to Taiwan, considering this position “fixed and unchangeable.”
