Today, Wednesday, UNIFIL expressed its increasing concern about the activities of Hezbollah members and Israeli soldiers near its positions in southern Lebanon, noting “the increasing use of drones and the resulting explosions inside and around its bases, which has endangered peacekeeping forces.”
It explained in a statement that on Monday, May 11, three drones believed to be belonging to Hezbollah exploded in an area where Israeli army soldiers were likely present, meters away from the UNIFIL headquarters in Naqoura. Another drone exploded in the same area on Tuesday, May 12.
The statement added, "Minutes after the last incident, a suspected Hezbollah drone exploded inside the UNIFIL headquarters in Naqoura, without any human casualties recorded, but with material damage to some buildings."
In a separate incident, a drone crashed inside an open square in the same headquarters on Sunday, May 10. It was later found to be unarmed, while the initial investigation indicated that it was Iranian-made, which suggests its connection to Hezbollah.
Also, on May 5, an armed drone believed to be belonging to Hezbollah fell on the roof of a United Nations building near Al-Haniya without exploding or causing casualties, according to the statement.
UNIFIL confirmed that it "continues to remind all parties of the need to avoid approaching its positions or exposing its forces to danger," noting that it "submits official protests to both the Israeli army and the relevant authorities in Lebanon," and stressed that it will continue "to submit impartial reports to the Security Council on developments in southern Lebanon."
