China's ambassador to the United Nations said it is necessary to reconsider the UN Security Council's decision to end the mandate of the long-running UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon by the end of this year. Envoy Fu Cong noted that China, which assumed the presidency of the Security Council for the month of May, is concerned about the situation in Lebanon. He added: There is no real ceasefire, but there is “less bombing.” He told reporters: "It is Israel's responsibility to stop this bombing of Lebanon." In response to a question about UNIFIL's mandate, the Chinese diplomat said: "We believe that the decision to withdraw UNIFIL should be reconsidered." Fu announced that he recently spoke about this issue with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. He revealed that the United Nations Secretariat is considering conducting a review and will present options in June to implement Security Council Resolution No. 1701, which ended a round of bloody conflict between Hezbollah and Israel in 2006. He added: "I believe that the opinion of the overwhelming majority in the Security Council is that this is not the right time to reconstitute the UNIFIL force." The head of UN peacekeeping operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, said last month that some form of UN presence may continue after the end of UNIFIL's mandate.
