US President Donald Trump announced that an agreement had been reached to start a temporary truce between Lebanon and Israel, starting at midday next Thursday and for a period of ten days, following contacts he held with both Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Trump said in his post: “I just had excellent conversations with the Honorable Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu,” adding that “these two leaders have agreed that in order to achieve peace between their countries, they will officially begin a 10-day truce beginning at 5 p.m. EST.”
He pointed out that "the two countries met on Tuesday for the first time in 34 years here in Washington, with our Foreign Minister Marco Rubio," referring to a meeting that brought together the two sides under the auspices of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Trump confirmed that he had assigned Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Rubio, along with Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Kaine, "to work with Israel and Lebanon to achieve lasting peace."
He concluded his post by saying: “It has been an honor for me to contribute to ending 9 wars around the world, and this will be the tenth, so let’s get this done.”
