UNIFIL: The Israeli army stopped our convoy near Naqoura
Fady Mahouly
UNIFIL issued the following statement:
Yesterday afternoon, the Israeli army stopped a routine convoy transporting military and civilian peacekeepers, as well as key contractors, coming from Beirut to the UNIFIL headquarters, a few kilometers from its destination in Naqoura.
UN-marked vehicles were eventually allowed to pass, but local contractors were asked to return to Beirut under security arrangements, even though the convoy had been fully coordinated in advance, including the presence of local contractors.
This is not an isolated incident. Similar restrictions, through road blockages or revocation of previous permits, have affected peacekeepers and the essential workers who support them. These actions raise concerns about the timely arrival of vital supplies, including food, fuel and water, to UNIFIL sites, particularly along the Blue Line.
While these challenges have been managed to date, continued movement restrictions threaten the sustainability of operations, including the ability of peacekeepers to report within their mandate on violations of Resolution 1701.
We renew our call on the Israeli army to respect the agreed-upon arrangements and fulfill its obligations to ensure the safety and security of peacekeeping forces, as well as the freedom of movement of all UNIFIL patrols and logistical convoys.”
