The US Central Command said in a notice to sailors on Monday that the US military will impose naval control in the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea east of the Strait of Hormuz, and that this measure will include all ships regardless of the flag they fly.
The memorandum indicated that maritime control would take effect at 2:00 GMT on Monday.
The notice stated: “Any ship entering or leaving the besieged area without a permit will be subject to interception, diversion, or detention.”
She said: “The control will not impede neutral navigation traffic through the Strait of Hormuz to and from non-Iranian destinations.” The memorandum explained that "neutral ships may be subject to verification and inspection to detect the presence of smuggled goods."
She indicated that shipments of humanitarian aid, including food, medical supplies and other essential goods, will be allowed provided that they are subject to inspection.
