On Saturday, the Iraqi Parliament elected the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan Party's candidate, Nizar Muhammad Saeed Amidi, as the new President of the Republic of Iraq for the next four years.
The new Iraqi president received 227 votes out of 249 representatives who cast their votes during the second round of secret balloting to elect the President of Iraq.
The Kurdistan Democratic Party bloc, led by Masoud Barzani, and the State of Law coalition, led by Nouri al-Maliki, were absent from the voting session, along with other representatives, after they officially announced a boycott of the presidential election session.
Amidi, who was born in the Amadiya district of Dohuk Governorate in the Kurdistan Region, served as Minister of Environment in the government of Muhammad Shiaa al-Sudani during the period from 2022 to 2024.
He also worked as director of the office of the presidents of Iraq: Fuad Masum, Barham Salih, and Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid.
