The Israeli army plans to establish a security zone in southern Lebanon... Christians are excluded.”
Fady Mahouly
The Israeli army announced that it would present at the political level a plan to completely destroy the villages adjacent to the border in southern Lebanon, and establish a security strip devoid of residents, while preventing the return of Lebanese residents to the villages on the contact line.
He said, according to what Israeli Army Radio reported, that Hezbollah returned during the last year to try to rebuild military infrastructure near the border, and therefore the entire area located 3 to 4 kilometers from the border must be transformed into a security zone with a front line of positions.
He acknowledged that the current restrictions do not allow for the disarmament of Hezbollah, and that this goal is not required to end this battle.
In full details:
1. The Israeli army presents this plan as a goal for the current campaign in the north, and it includes the complete destruction of the first line of villages in southern Lebanon, and the establishment of a new security strip (which it calls a “security zone”) that will be completely devoid of infrastructure and population.
2. To implement the plan, the army says it will need to completely destroy dozens of Lebanese villages located on the front line, from Kafr Kila, opposite Metulla, to Naqoura, opposite Shlomi and Ras Naqoura, including destroying all infrastructure and permanently preventing the return of residents.
3. According to the army, the plan will soon be presented to the general staff and political level for approval. It was prepared in parallel with legal approvals, given that these villages were used as “terrorist” infrastructure, which makes the entire civilian infrastructure there “suspicious,” and that the villages remaining standing may allow the rebuilding of military structures there, which would require their complete destruction.
4. The army adds that Hezbollah members returned to these villages after the ceasefire in November 2024, taking advantage of the return of some residents, and attempts were also monitored to re-establish underground infrastructure and store weapons. Therefore, the army concluded that there could be no return to the previous situation on the border, because the party would return again to these villages.
5. The proposed model is similar to the “yellow line model” in Gaza: a strip 2 to 4 kilometers wide (depending on geography), completely empty and under army control, with a line of military positions established. In practice, the army seeks to push the border line back into Lebanese territory.
6. The army excludes some small Christian villages within this strip, as they will not be destroyed, and their residents will be allowed to return, even though they are located within an area under Israeli security control.
7. An Israeli officer explains that this plan differs from the previous “security bar” in the 1980s and 1990s, as residents will not be allowed to live in the area, considering that their presence allows Hezbollah to return to it. The military presence will only be in the first kilometers, across a stable and strong front defense line.
8. The army acknowledges that the goal of disarming Hezbollah was too ambitious, and that current circumstances, including the long war and the focus on Iran, do not allow it to be achieved. He stresses that the realistic goal is to weaken the party, not to completely disarm it.
