MP Strida Geagea considered that the announcement by the Minister of Energy and Water, Joe Al-Saddi, that he would withdraw from attending Cabinet sessions “should constitute a serious alarm bell for the entire government,” noting that what is happening recently in the electricity file “is no longer acceptable under any pretext.”
Geagea stressed that the Lebanese should not pay the price for obstructing reform in the electricity sector, pointing out that Al-Saddi, since taking over the Ministry of Energy and Water, has done what was required of him to put the sector on the path to reform, starting with the formation of the regulatory body, through the steps aimed at reorganizing the sector and involving the private sector in energy production, all the way to the measures taken during the last year and a half to rebuild a viable electricity sector.
She stressed that what is required of the government today is to resolve this issue and remove the obstacles that prevent the completion of the path of reforming the electricity sector, considering that the Lebanese “are not concerned with the exchange of responsibilities between one ministry and another or between one institution and another, but rather that electricity reach their homes and that they see a state capable of making decisions and implementing them.”
Regarding the elections, Geagea warned that reopening the debate on the electoral law would lead to wasting time or postponing the electoral entitlement.
She said that the Council's mission at this stage is "clear and specific", and is to address issues that the government previously considered impossible to implement in practice, and to remove the necessary technical and legal obstacles to facilitate holding elections as quickly as possible.
She added: “As for turning the subcommittee into an arena for reopening the electoral law and engaging in endless discussions, this is something we reject.”
Geagea's words came during her chairing a meeting of the administrative body of the "Cedar Mountain Foundation" in Maarab, in the presence of former MP Joseph Ishak, the Vice President of the Foundation, Dr. Laila Geagea, the chosen treasurer, Fadi Al-Shediac, the secretary, lawyer Mario Saab, the licensed accounting expert, Fadi Eid, and the assistant to MP Geagea, Romanos Al-Shaar.
During the meeting, a number of files and projects that the Foundation is working on were discussed, especially social, educational, medical and development, in addition to following up on the executive stages of the project to build and equip the Foundation’s center in the city of Bcharre.
