US Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed with Jordanian King Abdullah II, by phone on Friday, the disarmament of Hezbollah within the tripartite agreement on Lebanon, according to the US State Department.
The ministry said in a statement: “Today, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a phone call with Jordanian King Abdullah II, during which the two sides discussed a number of bilateral and regional issues, including implementing the tripartite framework agreement in Lebanon, disarming Hezbollah, and supporting stability in Syria.” She added that Rubio expressed his thanks to the King for Jordan's contribution to strengthening regional security.
For his part, the Jordanian Royal Court reported that the King discussed during the call efforts to reduce escalation in the region. He stressed the necessity of reaching a comprehensive truce agreement that guarantees the security and sovereignty of the Arab countries, and the importance of the pivotal role of the United States in supporting regional stability.
The King renewed the warning against the repercussions of the Israeli escalation in southern Syria, stressing that Jordan stands alongside Damascus in its efforts to enhance its security and stability. He also referred to the results of the “Aqaba meetings” round held recently in France to mobilize international support for the Lebanese army and enable it to maintain Lebanon’s security and stability.
In Washington, Lebanon and Israel signed a preliminary agreement to reduce tension with American mediation. The document stipulates that the Lebanese army will regain control over what is known as the “experimental areas” in the south of the country, and links any subsequent Israeli withdrawal to the disarmament of Hezbollah and other armed groups.
Despite the agreement signed under American auspices on June 26, Israel continues to launch strikes on southern Lebanon, and maintains its military presence in parts of the border areas. The Lebanese National News Agency reported that Israeli artillery bombed the towns of Beit Yahoun, Al-Mansouri, Wadi Zebqin, and Wadi Al-Saluki on Friday morning, while Israeli forces fired machine guns towards Hadada and the outskirts of Baraashit.
The Israeli army announced that the Air Force targeted more than 370 targets during the last month that it said belonged to Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.
