On Sunday, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich called for waging war in the occupied West Bank, dismantling the Palestinian Authority, and annexing areas of southern Lebanon and the Gaza Strip that are under the control of the Israeli army. Smotrich said, in a podcast for the Israeli website Ynet, that he wants to annex the areas extending up to the “yellow line” in Gaza, which separates Hamas-controlled areas from areas under Israeli control, and access in Lebanon to the Litani River. The far-right minister justified his call by saying: “If the war ends on the same lines from which it began, what will deter the enemy from waging war again?” Regarding the West Bank, Smotrich said: “I think we need to go to war in Judea and Samaria,” using the Israeli name for the West Bank, and called for the dismantling of the Palestinian Authority, accusing it of supporting terrorism.
