Prime Minister Dr. Nawaf Salam held a meeting with Egyptian Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, in New York, on the sidelines of the work of the United Nations General Assembly, in the presence of Lebanon’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Ahmed Arafa, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Immigration and Egyptian Affairs Abroad, Dr. Badr Abdel Ati. During the meeting, President Madbouly affirmed the constants of the Egyptian position in support of Lebanon, and Egypt’s keenness to support the Lebanese state and its national institutions, in a way that preserves Lebanon’s sovereignty, security, stability, and territorial integrity. He also affirmed Egypt's support for the process of extending the authority of the Lebanese state over its entire territory, and enabling its institutions to carry out their responsibilities, most notably the Lebanese army. For his part, President Salam thanked Egypt for its continued support for Lebanon, the state and its institutions, praising the role it plays in supporting Lebanon and contributing to efforts aimed at reducing escalation and enhancing stability in the region. The situation in the south and the requirements for stabilization were discussed, especially Israel’s complete withdrawal from Lebanese territory, stopping its attacks, completing the process of confining weapons to the state and extending its authority over its entire territory by its own forces, in addition to continuing to work through the tripartite framework to address the outstanding issues through negotiation, in a way that supports the path of return and recovery and stabilizing the return of people to their towns and villages. The meeting also discussed regional developments and the importance of intensifying efforts to reduce escalation, spare the region from further confrontations, enhance security and stability, and create conditions for diplomatic solutions. They also discussed the economic conditions in Lebanon, Egypt and the region, and the challenges posed by regional developments on the economies of the countries of the region, in addition to ways to strengthen economic and trade relations and expand areas of cooperation between Lebanon and Egypt, in a way that serves the common interests of the two countries and peoples.
