Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani revealed that he made it clear to Israel that there are no plans to establish a Turkish military base at Abu Al-Duhur Air Base, which Israel bombed on Tuesday, noting that the site is being rehabilitated for use by the Syrian Air Force.
Al-Shaibani pointed out that soldiers from Türkiye visited the base within the framework of broader military training and cooperation. He denied the presence of Turkish military reinforcements, saying that the facility was largely empty and work had not yet begun.
Al-Shaibani said in an interview with Axios: “There is no intention to establish a Turkish base there, nor to deploy a permanent Turkish military presence or Turkish forces at the site.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said yesterday that Israel warned Syria before the strike not to allow a Turkish presence at the base. Netanyahu added: "Our message was very clear. Don't do that. I think they did not fully understand the message."
Al-Shaibani stressed that Israel has no legitimate justification for this bombing.
He stressed that Syria is still open to negotiating with Israel regarding calming tensions.
He pointed out that the two sides made significant progress towards reaching a security agreement during year-long talks mediated by the United States, but Israel later backed down from its commitments and the agreement was not implemented.
