The head of the Lebanese Forces Party, Samir Geagea, considered that the essence of the faltering negotiations between Lebanon and Israel lies in the failure to implement what was agreed upon since 2024, especially with regard to dismantling the military and security organization of Hezbollah, considering that this led to the political authority losing its credibility. Geagea stressed, in an interview with Al-Markazia, that the Lebanese army does not bear responsibility for the faltering negotiations, but rather the political authority, which he said is still betting on time and regional developments to avoid confronting Hezbollah. He said that the ceasefire agreement in November 2024 stipulated, according to his account, that Israel would stop its operations and withdraw from Lebanon in exchange for the dismantling of the military organization of Hezbollah, considering that the failure of the Lebanese side to implement what it committed to led to the collapse of the agreement and the continuation of military operations. He added that the government's subsequent decisions to restrict weapons to the state, leading to the framework agreement and negotiations with Israel, did not change the reality, which led to a “credibility problem” towards the state, faltering negotiations, and preventing Israeli withdrawals. Geagea called for taking practical steps in the arms issue, referring to Iraq’s experience in this field, and asked: “Where are we in implementing what has been decided?” Regarding the amnesty law file, Geagea rejected the criticism directed at the representatives of the “Lebanese Forces” regarding those deported to Israel, stressing that the representatives of the “strong republic” were, according to him, the only ones among the Christian representatives who raised the file and worked to address it. He pointed out that the law includes civilians who are not involved in the South Lebanon Army, considering that the issuance of implementing decrees will allow these people to return through the required legal procedures. He also criticized what he described as “investing the blood of the army martyrs for political interests,” considering that the army martyrs “are for all of Lebanon,” and that responsibility must be determined against those who caused them to be sent to confrontations in the Abra events. Geagea was surprised that Foreign Minister Youssef Raji did not participate in some presidential visits and the negotiating scene, considering that this is not consistent with the concept of the state of institutions. He said that Raji is “a man of institutions,” noting that building the state requires not excluding the Minister of Foreign Affairs from foreign files, but at the same time he stressed the need to give priority to the “supreme national interest” at the current stage. Regarding following up on the issue with President Joseph Aoun, Geagea said: “I prefer to keep the discussion inside closed rooms.”
