Prime Minister Nawaf Salam confirmed that the most prominent development in the ceasefire file in southern Lebanon is “more American involvement than before” in efforts to stabilize the calm, indicating that Washington remains the party capable of putting actual pressure on Israel to stop the ongoing violations.
Regarding the ongoing negotiations, Salam explained that the idea of “reciprocity” between Israel’s withdrawal from the south and the deployment of the Lebanese army in the areas from which it withdraws is still on the table but has not yet crystallized, which means that it is still under discussion within the negotiating track.
He stressed that the success of American sponsorship must be accompanied by support for the restoration of full Lebanese sovereignty, whether through Israel’s withdrawal from the occupied territories or through strengthening the role of the state and the army in the path of “arms exclusivity.”
Salam also renewed his rejection of what he described as “futile adventures,” in reference to the recent war, stressing that Lebanon has paid heavy prices in terms of killing, destruction, and displacement, calling for an end to incitement and treason.
