The Electricité du Liban Corporation reported, “At approximately one o’clock in the afternoon (1:00 p.m.), as a result of deteriorating weather conditions, frequent thunderstorms, and lightning strikes, there was an automatic and sudden disconnection of my primary 66 kV power line, which led to a steady increase in the frequency level (Over Frequency) on the electrical network, which caused the disconnection of all production groups from the electrical network.
The corporation explained in a statement that avoiding such general outages remains difficult in light of the lack of a sufficient reserve of production capacity, as network stability requires the availability of production capacities of no less than 1,000 megawatts as a minimum. Noting also that the process of managing, operating and monitoring the network with the required effectiveness without the National Control Center (NCC), which was completely destroyed during the Beirut Port explosion on August 4, 2020, is without major challenges.
Accordingly, the organization's technical teams are continuously working to monitor the situation and gradually reconnect the production groups to the transportation network in accordance with the approved technical principles to restore the situation to what it was. The Electricité du Liban reassures everyone once again of the continuity of ensuring electricity supply, and confirms that it continues to evaluate the situation periodically and takes the necessary measures at the operational and technical levels to adapt to the current challenges, especially those that negatively affect the collection process in light of the rise in the prices of oil derivatives globally, in order to overcome this difficult stage.
Finally, the Electricité du Liban will keep all honorable citizens informed of any developments regarding the electrical supply, through subsequent statements in this regard.”
