Despite the attempts... Lebanon is in total darkness

Lebanon entered into total darkness after a complete collapse in the national electricity network of the “Electricité du Liban” institution more than an hour ago, despite the institution’s attempts during the recent period to increase supply hours and secure the necessary fuel for production plants based on its own revenues, in an effort to improve electrical supply in various regions.
The decline in electrical production to below 400 megawatts led to a loss of stability of the national grid, a level that is not sufficient to maintain its balance, which caused a power outage in various Lebanese regions and accelerated the complete collapse of the system.
This outage gains additional significance because it occurred at a time when demand for electricity was significantly low in a number of regions, especially in the south and the southern suburbs of Beirut, where consumption declined to almost non-existent levels as a result of the conditions of war and displacement. However, the network was unable to maintain its balance, which reflects the extent of the fragility that the electricity sector has reached in the country.
The Electricity Corporation had previously confirmed that it is continuously working to increase electrical supply hours by purchasing the fuel needed for production plants, based on the revenues generated from collecting bills and the campaigns to remove infringements that it launched since the beginning of 2025, noting that the supply hours witnessed a noticeable improvement during the years 2024, 2025, and 2026, especially in recent months.
However, the Corporation pointed out, on the other hand, that a number of official departments and public institutions are still behind in paying their financial dues for electricity consumption, which amounted to about $270 million according to the new tariff, in addition to about $30 million annually in the value of consumption in Palestinian refugee camps.
The Corporation confirmed that the continuation of this situation negatively affects its ability to secure the necessary fuel for production plants and increase feeding hours, noting that the commitment of public administrations and official institutions, in addition to Palestinian refugee camps, to pay the due dues could enable the daily electrical feeding to be increased by about an additional two hours.
